How hard is the HVAC exam? It depends on your state and license level: as of October 2026 there is no single national HVAC license exam and no official national pass rate. This guide covers HVAC exam questions, HVAC exam prep and how to study for an HVAC license (journeyman, master and contractor): what the exams test, open-book tabbing skills, a study plan (our estimate), five tactics, common mistakes, three original sample questions and retake advice. One official example: Virginia's PSI candidate bulletin (dated July 2026) lists the journeyman/master HVAC exam at 85 questions in 210 minutes, 60 correct to pass for journeyman (about 71%) and 64 for master, open book with permanent tabs only; the residential HVAC exam is 55 questions, 120 minutes, 39 to pass. North Carolina's contractor board says to bring all allowed reference materials and wait 90 days to retest; Texas says its air conditioning and refrigeration contractor exams are given by PSI. Check your own state board. EPA 608 is a federal certification to handle refrigerant and does not expire; NATE and HVAC Excellence are industry certifications, not licenses. Independent guide, not affiliated with any licensing board, the EPA, NATE or HVAC Excellence. Questions are original.
